The Biblical injunction regarding deacons in 1 Tim 3:8-13 provide the framework for the IPHC understanding of deaconate eligibility. In addition, candidates for the deaconate must tithe faithfully and have a good reputation in the church and community (that is the basic meaning of living above reproach).

IPHC believes that men and women can be deacons.

IPHC also believes that persons divorced and remarried may serve as deacons. The specifics of this position are spelled out in the IPHC Manual.

IPHC holds that members of this church should not drink any intoxicating beverages. We believe that abuse of wine in our culture means we should live differently as a witness to the gospel.
